A 34-year-old self-confessed drug addict was sent to prison after he admitted to breaking into his aunt?s house on two occasions.

Rodney Simons, of Wingood Bay, Sandys Parish, was remanded in custody on Monday after he pleaded guilty in Magistrates? Court to two charges of breaking and entering.

Simons also admitted to stealing $540 in cash from his elderly aunt?s bedroom during the first break-in at her home this past April.

He did not steal any money from the home during the second break-in on July 29.

After breaking a screen to enter one of the bedrooms, he was caught in his aunt?s bedroom where she was lying on the bed.

The woman?s grandson then chased Simons from the home.

When he was later arrested by Police, Simons admitted to both break-ins and expressed his remorse to the officers.

?He said he felt disgusted with himself, especially since his aunt had been kind to him in the past,? Crown counsel Juan Wolffe read to the court from the Police report.

At that time, Simons asked to be placed in a court drug rehabilitation programme.

He said he was a long-time cocaine and heroin addict.

Mr. Wolffe told Magistrate Edward King that Simons had a lengthy record of breaking and entering convictions, which stretched back to 1991.

Since there were no serious crimes on his record, Mr. Wolffe said Simons was eligible for a court ordered drug programme.

Simons beseeched the Magistrate: ?Your honour can I be in drug court please? I do have an addiction.?

Mr. King remanded him in custody to await the outcome of a report from the Bermuda Assessment and Referral Centre (BARC) on his suitability for drug treatment.
