Club vows to help in police hunt for gunman

Shot dead: Rickai Swan, 26, has been part of the Southampton Rangers Sports Club for many years, said its president, Gerri Saltus

The victim of Friday night’s fatal shooting outside Southampton Rangers had grown up playing football for the club, while his family had been part of the organisation for many generations.

Rickai Swan, 26, was shot dead when a gunman opened fire outside the front of the club at 10.40pm. A 29-year-old Southampton man was also shot in the upper torso, but escaped with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police revealed last night that no arrests had yet been made and urged anyone with information to come forward.

Gerri Saltus, the president of Southampton Rangers Sports Club, said Mr Swan would be a “big miss”, and pledged that the club would assist police in every way to bring his killers to justice.

“This has been a difficult few days,” he added. “On behalf of the Southampton Rangers Club executive and members, I wish to offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of Rickai Swan.

“Mr Swan grew up playing football for Rangers and his family has been a part of this club for multiple generations.

“As a community we must continue to come together to cure our youth and ourselves from this sickness of self-hating violence. To have another young black Bermudian male taken from us in such a senseless manner is quite disheartening.

“Mr Swan will be a miss to everyone in the Southampton Rangers family. Our hearts pour out in particular to his mother, sister and brother during this difficult time.

“Rest assured that the club will assist the police in every way possible to bring the perpetrators of this horrible act to justice.”

Last night, Michael Dunkley and Walter Roban, the Shadow Public Safety Minister, condemned the shooting and urged anyone with any information to come forward.

Area MP Zane De Silva told ‘The Royal Gazette’ he had known Mr Swan’s grandmother and mother very well.

“My heart goes out to his family, they are obviously very upset at the moment,” he said.

“It’s important to stress that a lot of very good, positive things happen at Southampton Rangers. The club and its president, Gerri Saltus, are obviously very upset at the moment.

“They work so hard and there are all sorts of programmes of young people that are run at the club. I will be meeting with Gerri in the coming days to see how we can move forward.

“But the most important thing here is that we all work together in the aftermath of this tragedy. We need to help the police and talk to our young men.

“This has been going on for too long and the community and community clubs need to work together to make sure we get through to these young men.”

The Premier described the shooting as “a harsh reminder of the work that remains to be done to strengthen the fabric of our communities against violence of this kind”.

Mr Dunkley said: “Our thoughts and prayers are extended to the family of the victim of this crime as they come to terms with so sudden a loss. As we do so and as we unite in supporting them at this difficult time, we can also help them by helping the investigation.

“Justice is our communal responsibility and bringing the offenders to justice should be of equal concern in our community.”

Mr Roban added: “It was heartbreaking to hear of another incidence of violence in our community. It was worse to receive the news that yet another young Bermudian had been shot dead in Southampton on Friday night.

“This same gun violence has become a blight in our community that we must work to eradicate, and we continue to join with the police and the community in appealing for anyone with information to come forward.”

Officers from the serious crime unit and forensic support unit have embarked on a full investigation into the murder.

Acting chief inspector Dave Greenidge said a forensic pathologist would be flown into Bermuda to conduct an autopsy in the coming days.

“Police would like to speak with anyone who might have seen anything suspicious in and around the Southampton Rangers Sports Club, around the time and after the incident, or the preceding days leading up to the murder,” he said.

“Anyone who was at the Southampton Rangers Sports Club at the time of the incident is urged to contact police.”

Anyone with any information should call the serious crime unit on 247-1739 or the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.
