Bermuda's Tyrone Smith

Long jumper Tyrone Smith and heptathlete Shianne Smith have been named as Bermuda’s Female and Male Best Athletes of 2010 by the Central American and Caribbean Athletics Confederation (CACAC).Earlier this year, Shianne Smith shattered the national heptathlon record with 5,127 points at the Claremont Classic meet for Heptathlon/Decathlon in the US, and represented the Island at the CAC Games in Puerto Rico.She also graduated from Cal State last year completing her four year degree while on a track scholarship, and won the Bermuda national championships in the heptathlon at the National Sports Centre.It was at the CAC Games where Tyrone Smith leaped his way into the history books by winning the gold medal with a jump of 8.03 metres.He also came fifth at the Commonwealth Games in Dehli with a leap of 7.76m.On the back of gold win only the second won by a Bermudian at the CAC Games Smith was selected for the Americas Cup team to compete in the Continental Cup, where he finished fifth with a jump of 7.91 m in Croatia.Europe captured the Continental Cup by a narrow margin over the Americas team, 429 points to 419.5.The CACAC Male and Female Athletes of the Year were Dayron Robles from Cuba and Veronica Campbell-Brown from Jamaica, and the best Juniors were announced as Dailenys Alcanatara Cuba’s Triple Jump World Junior Champion and Kirani James Grenada’s World Junior Champion in 400m.
