Chef Ming makes a welcome return home
After more than three months of treatment for a very serious brain and head injury, chef Fred Ming was all smiles when he returned home yesterday.
Although he was wheeled out in a wheelchair by Delta Airlines staff, Mr. Ming was able to stand with the use of a cane and give his family a happy reunion hug.
On October 7, Mr. Ming was involved in a cycle collision on South Shore Road in Smiths.
Mr. Ming was in critical condition in the intensive care unit of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for nearly three weeks after the accident.
While he was in hospital, his wife Charlotte Ming asked the public to keep ?praying for a miracle? and a prayer vigil was held at the Bermuda College on October 14.
On October 28 he was flown out to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston when a bed there became available.
However, during the three months he was in Boston, Mr. Ming lost all memory about the day of the accident.
?I can?t tell you anything about the accident,? Mr. Ming said.
?But it feels great to be home after three months away?.
He said he was feeling good and ?everything was going well with his recovery?.
But the work is not over yet.
?I have to undertake a few exercises and things in Bermuda,? he said.
He thanked the staff at both King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.
And he said the doctors and nurses at the Spaulding Hospital were ?very grateful? to staff at KEMH who informed them of his previous medical records which sped up his recovery process.
He was looking forward to getting back in the kitchen again soon.
?As soon as I get myself together. I don?t think I?ve quite lost my touch, but I have been told to take it easy?.
Mrs. Ming said she ?wanted to thank all Bermudians for their phone calls and continued prayer and support?.
?Everyone has been wonderful? she said.
Mr. Ming?s sister Cora Ming-Tucker said she spent three weeks in Boston with her brother and could not believe his progress.
?Praise God for the miracle,? she said. ?A remarkable recovery has happened here?.
Mr. Ming was one of the early faculty members at the Bermuda College and was on the original staff of the Hotel School when it opened on the Stonington Campus nearly 30 years ago.
