`Old Boys' hold their own against U-18 Select
Showing that there still remains fuel in the collective tank, albeit only in short bursts, the `Golden Oldies' gave a Bermuda Under-18 Select all they could handle during Monday's charity soccer match at BAA Field.
Using veteran guile and shrewd positioning, soccer's old boy squad, which contained among them the likes of Cyril (Dago) Steede, Wendell (Joe) Trott and Randy Bean, held their more energetic counterparts to a 0-0 draw.
Of great benefit was the fact that two 30 minute halves were used rather than the customary 45, something co-organiser and participant Paul Scope noted.
"We were hanging on at the end, but we were able to show the young guys a thing or two,'' said Scope, himself a former First Division player. "The old ... I mean older guys really enjoyed playing the match, which, for some, was the first time they had laced up for several years.
"It was all in good fun. We really wanted to get this event off the ground this year and there were a few problems, but, largely due to the efforts of the guys at North Village things eventually fell into place. We will be looking to make this an even bigger affair next year.'' The second part of the night's action saw an East versus West Commercial All-Star clash, with West showing that they are indeed best with a 2-0 triumph.
Goals on either side of the break saw the West make history as the inaugural winners.
Jack Castle, the former PHC zebras' stalwart got things rolling in the 10th minute, showing an attacking fervour largely absent during his heyday, where he was a classic full-back. Finding himself in space some 30 yards out, Castle uncoiled a piledriving left-foot effort that found the back of the net.
Play see-sawed back and forth for the next 70 minutes of play, before South African import, Saleem Mukudem, fast making a name for himself as a talented all-round sportsman, dazzled fans and opponents with a mazy solo run, leaving three players in his wake before depositing the ball past the goalkeeper.
The event raised funds to benefit the Bermuda Referees Association and the Bermuda Youth Soccer programme.
A Commercial League Select has been compiled to take on a combined Belgium/Dutch Navy team tomorrow at BAA Field, starting at 7.00 p.m.
