Fed Cup team slip to second heavy loss

Double winner: Phillips and Dzidic with their trophies alongside Michael Wolife, Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association president

Bermuda’s Fed Cup team slipped to their second successive defeat in Dominican Republic.

The side followed up their 3-0 loss to Guatemala with a 3-0 defeat against Puerto Rico, managing to win just four games in the process.

Jacklyn Lambert was responsible for all four of those games, losing 6-2, 6-2 to Ariana Rodriguez. In the other games, Zaire Simmons lost 6-0, 6-0, to Monica Maitias and Cayla Cross and Kirstin Saltus was comfortable beaten 6-0, 6-0 by Julieanne Bou and Erica Braschi.

Meanwhile, at home, Imani Phillips won the singles and doubles titles in the ITF Cotec under-14s tournament.

In the singles, Phillips beat fellow Bermudian Lauren Way, and in the doubles she teamed up with Nina Dzidic to beat the team of Maria Ramirez and Shelby Madeiros.

In the Bank of Butterfield Foundation tournament, top seed Stephan Koenigfest of Bolivia will face Lane Leschly today in the boys singles final and Kate Paulus will face fellow American Madison Battaglia in the girls final.

Koenigfest had a relatively easy 6-1, 7-5 win over Maxwell Mendelsohn in yesterday’s semi-final, with Leschly beating Nick Brookes 6-3, 6-4 to book his place in the last two.

Brookes at least had the consolation of winning the doubles title, partnering up with Harry Butler as they beat top-seeds Chase Burton and Sebastian Mermersky 10-5 in a tiebreaker after finishing with a set apiece.

In the women’s draw, Paulus was taken to three sets by Naomi Idelis Waters, eventually winning 6-2, 4-6, 7-6. Battaglia, meanwhile, recovered from losing the first set 6-0, to finally see off Claire Koke, of Canada, 0-6, 6-4, 6-0.

Paulus will have a chance to make up for the disappointment of losing yesterday’s close girls doubles final, as she and Cheyenne Lilienthal were beaten 7-6, 7-6 by second seeds Lillian Gabrielsen and Katie LaFrance.

Today’s finals matches at WER Joell Stadium will begin at 10am.
