Internet savvy travellers will now be able to surf the web before they fly with the launch of a new Internet lounge at the airport.

The facility is the first phase of Internet development at the airport and is located in the US departure lounge.

A second lounge will be in the International Departure Lounge and in other public areas.

Mike Osbourne, acting general manager of the Department of Airport Operations, said he was pleased to offer travellers the service as it was something "they want and expect".

It will cost customers $5 for 30 minutes online on the high speed internet link, which features flat screened computers.

"We continuously look for new ways to make the Bermuda travelling experience more pleasurable and convenient," said Transport Minister Dr. Ewart Brown.

"For business and holidaymakers alike the necessity to keep in touch with people doesn't stop because they are travelling."

Telecommunications Minister, Ren?e Webb also praised the move.

"Bermuda is one of the leading offshore e-commerce jurisdictions in the world and I am pleased that we are now able to provide internet facilities for both local and visiting travellers, right until they step on the plane," she said.

"More and more people want to be able to communicate with each other 24 hours a day and this is one further step in providing the infrastructure for people so that they can accomplish this online."
