Assault trial ends with jury discharged

The Supreme Court trial of a man accused of attacking his stepfather ended yesterday with the jury being discharged.

Garth Wayne Bell, 40, has denied a charge of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to Herbie Spencer during an altercation at a Crossland Lane, Pembroke home.

Mr Spencer, 63, reportedly suffered injuries to his head and neck in the incident, which occurred in the early evening of August 11 last year.

While the trial formally began this week with a jury being selected and the Crown opening its case, Acting Justice Juan Wolffe yesterday morning discharged the jury, concluding the trial before any evidence could be heard.

The matter, however, remains before the courts, and is expected to be mentioned at the monthly arraignments session in October.
