Strong team targeting podium finish

Patrick Foster will compete for Bermuda in the team event in Cayman

Bermuda are sending a strong team of 18 players to compete in the Senior Caribbean Squash Championships (CASA) which starts this weekend in Cayman Islands.

Key members of the team include Micah Franklin who is seeded fifth in the men’s open division while Runa Reta is ranked second in the women’s singles and has set her sights on winning the championship in her first time playing in the event.

Other notable players looking to advance in the draws are Noah Browne and Rachel Barnes.

The singles competition starts on Sunday with the team events scheduled to run from August 19 to 23, with Bermuda sending a full contingent for the first time in several years.

Patrick Foster, the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association director of football, will lead the men’s team while Reta, the assistant director, will head the women’s team. Tony Prentice, the BSRA co-president, will captain the veterans’ team.

Bermuda are looking to finish in the top three nations for the overall competition.

“This may be the first time that we have ever sent three full teams to CASA, and such strong players at that,” Foster said.

“Every one of the 18 players has been training hard in anticipation for this event, and is excited at the prospect of competing at a high level and hopefully placing on the podium.

“It’s just great to see Bermuda showcasing the depth of talent that we have as a small island, and seeing how far we can go in this championship.”
