US tourist fined for drinking and driving

An American tourist has been fined after admitting drink-driving.

John Charles Osbourne, 55, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to driving while over the legal blood-alcohol limit on Friday.

The court heard that about 7pm, Police attended a minor traffic collision near the junction of South Road and Camp Road. The officers spoke to Osbourne and noticed that he smelled of alcohol and was unsteady on his feet, leaning on his motorcycle to maintain his balance.

Asked if he had been drinking, he admitted that he had a few beers. He was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station, where he provided a breath sample.

The lowest reading showed he had 154 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — almost double the legal limit of 80mg.

Senior Magistrate Juan Wolffe fined Osbourne $1,500 and banned him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.

Osbourne was scheduled to leave the Island yesterday.
