Evergreen Burchall bags brace

David (Berker) Burchall rolled back the years at Wellington Oval last Saturday to spur Somerset Over-40s to a convincing 3-1 dismantling of St.George's Over-40s.

The former Trojans striker, pictured here in his heyday, scored a brace to help Somerset tighten their grip on the cup they easily retained after running their opponents into the ground.

Rudell Tankard then rubbed salt into the wounds by notching Somerset's third before Charles (Nature) Wade netted St.George's' consolation.

Burchall put Somerset's noses out front in the 12th minute when he intercepted the ball deep in St.George's' own half and fired past an exposed Mugs McCallan in the East Enders' goal.

He then doubled the visitors' lead 18 minutes later after 'keeper McCallan fumbled the ball in the box.

Tankard then put the result beyond doubt after an attempted clearance was deflected into his path.

Wade then gave St.George's' die-hard fans something to finally cheer about when he capitalised on a through ball in the 82nd minute to pull one back for the home side who retired the number seven jersey of former Colts player Noel (Sub) Smith during a moving half-time ceremony.

"Somerset were definitely deserving winners.

"They dominated the whole match," commented St.George's' Steve Paynter.

The Over-40s Old Boys match between Somerset and St.George's has been played annually for the past 15 years.

To date Somerset have won the match on eight occasions while St.George's have won it six times.

Among those honoured following last Saturday's well-attended match were former national coach Gary Darrell, ex-St.George's president Lewis (Red) DeSilva, Neil Paynter sr, Charlie Fox, Sheldon Thompson, Delano Bulford and Sheldon Lapsley.
