Volley team cruise into next round of Worlds
Bermuda's national women's volleyball team completed a clean sweep in the first round of 2010 World Championships in Marigot, St. Martin last night, beating Anguilla 3-0 to secure passage to the next round.
Unbeaten in their previous three matches, the Bermuda team proved too strong for Anguilla as they carved out a 25-10, 25-18, 25-18 victory.
The team return tomorrow when they will immediately start preparing for the next round in Trinidad.
After crushing both St. Kitts and Nevis and Dominica 3-0 last week, they overwhelmed British Virgin Islands in just 60 minutes on Friday night, winning 25-5, 25-9, 25-15 in exactly 60 minutes.
That all but assured their place in the next phase of the Worlds. And they completed the job last night.
They now face a trip to Port of Spain, Trinidad from May 31 to June 7 when they will face a tougher test against the hosts, Netherlands Antilles, Aruba, Suriname and US Virgin Islands.
But on current form they will be among the favourites to place in the top three which would see them advance to the third qualifying round to face the likes of Cuba, USA and Dominican Republic, ranked among the top teams in the world.
The Championship finals will be contested in Japan next year.
Bermuda's team will also fly the Island's flag at the Island Games in Aland in the Baltic Sea later this year.
