BIBA also has plans to take the Bermuda Market Briefing, complete with a new 10-minute video, to the US, possibly twice per year, added Mrs. Wendy Davis Johnson.
The briefing, part of BIBA's effort to promote the Island's international business sector abroad, was attended by 120 people and was held at Merchant Taylors' Hall in the City of London.
Guests included; insurers, executives from multinational UK companies, fund managers, and senior partners from UK and US law and accounting firms attended.
"BIBA's members work in partnership with Government to develop Bermuda's international business industry and are involved in important liaison and coordination functions with other industry organisations. Membership in BIBA provides local companies with the opportunity to support industry initiatives which keep Bermuda competitive,'' said Mr. Cummings Zuill, BIBA chairman.
The Bermuda presenters included Mr. Michael Butt, president and CEO of Mid Ocean Reinsurance Company Ltd., Mr. Kenneth O'Neill, senior partner of Moore, Stephens & Butterfield, Mr. Donald Malcolm, senior associate with Conyers, Dill & Pearman, Finance Minister the Hon. David Saul, Minister of Management and Technology the Hon. Grant Gibbons, Mr. Glenn Titterton, Deputy Chairman of BIBA, Mr. John Campbell QC, senior partner with Appleby, Spurling & Kempe, Mr.
Peter Rodger, senior vice president/group legal advisor with the Bank of Butterfield.
The briefing, which started with the new video, represents a move by Island businesses to seek out new business. Surveys by BIBA and attendance at a major mutual fund conference in the US other recent examples of this effort. The video, produced by Fresh Creations Productions and with post-production done by Audience Communications, a Toronto firm, presents an overview of insurance, mutual funds, trusts, aircraft and shipping registers, international arbitration and intellectual property and software.
Mr. Brian O'Hara, Chief Executive Officer of XL Insurance Company Ltd., narrates the video which includes comments from; Senator Mrs. Lynda Milligan-Whyte, parliamentary Secretary for Finance, Mr. Mansfield Brock, Bermuda Monetary Authority chairman and Mr. Brian Hall, Insurance Advisory Committee chairman.
BIBAs now has 41 members with Hemisphere Management Ltd., Leeds Management Ltd., Meridian Management Ltd., and PRP Performa Ltd., recently joining.
A day prior to the BIBA briefing, Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan and Minister of Management and technology the Hon. Grant Gibbons attended an Eversheds Jaques & Lewis gathering in London.
The UK firm is associated with the Bermuda law firm of Richards, Francis & Francis. The invitation was initiated by lawyers Mr. Arthur Hodgson and Ms Robin Todd.
The Premier discussed the history of Bermuda's offshore business while Dr.
Gibbons discussed the opportunities presented by the return of the Baselands.
Dr. Gibbons said two firms showed interest in locating in Bermuda.
