Woman denies assaulting police officer

A 49-year-old woman was remanded into custody this morning after she denied unlawfully assaulting a man and a police officer.

Saudia Virgil, of no fixed address, allegedly attacked Joseph Fray and the officer in Pembroke yesterday.

After hearing submissions by both prosecutor Alan Richards and duty counsel Alexandra Wheatley, Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo remanded Ms Virgil for her own safety.

Mr Tokunbo ordered a mental health report and adjourned the matter to May 7 for mention.

Also in court was a Hamilton Parish man accused of conspiring to obstruct justice.

The 62-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded not guilty to conspiring with persons not before the courts to obstruct, pervert, prevent or defeat the course of justice in Bermuda between a date unknown and February 28.

Mr Tokunbo granted $2,000 bail and set a mention date for tomorrow.
