Ex-SEC commissioner to speak at conference

Former SEC commissioner Troy Paredes

A former Securities and Exchange (SEC) commissioner is to speak at a regulations and compliance conference in Bermuda next month.

Troy Paredes, now a senior strategy and policy advisor for PwC in the US, will take part in the Regulation, Operation and Compliance Symposium — the first time the event has been held in Bermuda.

The event, sponsored by PwC and run by the Regulatory Compliance Association (RCA), will also feature a speech on the Island’s attractions for fund managers by Premier Michael Dunkley and Sir Russell Coutts, the CEO of America’s Cup defenders Team Oracle USA.

Mr Paredes worked at the SEC for five years until 2013 — serving throughout the global financial crisis and through the implementation of the US Dodd-Frank Act in 2010, which introduced tough new regulations governing financial institutions.

PwC Bermuda asset management leader Scott Watson-Brown said: “The RCA’s symposium offers an unprecedented opportunity to obtain exclusive perspectives and network with senior regulators and fund managers on developments, challenges and the outlook for the industry.”

Mr Watson-Brown is also a founding member of the curriculum advisory committee of the Bermuda College/RCA professional development programme, with the RCA sponsoring 100 scholarships for Bermudian students.

The event will be preceded by the Women in Asset Management and Regulation Summit, where senior women executives will discuss career challenges and opportunities in the sector.
