Seeing the light

The Gibbs Hill Lighthouse is expected to be back in complete working order in the next couple of weeks after minor repairs are completed.

Non-rotating, emergency lights have been installed on the outside railings to aid navigation, but Michael Dolding of Marine and Ports said this week he expected that a few small ball bearings must be replaced on the permanent rotating light and electrical wiring needed to be re-connected.

The unique metal building's lighting equipment has been undergoing extensive refurbishment over the last couple of months.

One of the main projects was to install bearings underneath the light's turntable, and fix and reinstall the lens, which, before Hurricane Fabian, floated in mercury.

Man arrested

Police are investigating a break-in Thursday morning in a Rockville Lane, Pembroke home in which an elderly woman may have awakened to find an intruder.

The 82-year-old woman told Police she heard noises in her bathroom at 1.30 a.m. and when she investigated, saw a man escaping on foot. Nothing was reported stolen.

Only a short time later, Police successfully apprehended the suspect when they attended another breaking and entering scene, also in Pembroke.

A 37-year-old Pembroke man was subsequently arrested and detained.

Car stolen

The theft of a car from a Smith's gas station by two men has Police appealing to the public for information on the crime.

According to the complainant's report to Police, the black Opel Astra was removed from Terceira's Towing and Gas Station sometime between 9 p.m. on Tuesday and and 10 a.m. Wednesday. Police report that the car, which has the registration number 28518, was stolen by two men who they did not identify.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen this car to to contact them at 295-01.

Tools stolen

A handy thief made off the tools from a Sandys parish home at the weekend.

Police attended a Sound View Road property on Tuesday evening after the resident reported a breaking and entering. The complainant told Police that some time between 8.45 p.m. on Saturday and 5.30 p.m. that day an unknown culprit had gained entry into his home.

The culprit made off with a green Kanga hammer, a blue Makita chipping hammer, a yellow cordless drill and a yellow DeWalt skill saw. Police inquiries into the incident are currently underway.
