Fleeing Jamaican national jailed

A 40-year-old drunk driver who tried to escape from Police but was caught after he passed out was fined $1,000 in Magistrates? Court yesterday.

Chesterfield Robinson, of Devonshire Parish, pleaded guilty to driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Crown counsel Oonagh Vaucrosson said that after being arrested Robinson had praised the arresting officer.

?Damn girl you can drive,? he said. ?I?m impressed.?

Mrs. Vaucrosson said Police on mobile patrol had to ?slam on the breaks? when they saw Robinson, riding a motorcycle, carelessly enter the junction near Jubilee Road in Devonshire on May 25.

Police cautioned Robinson and noticed that his speech was slurred and that he was swaying even while seated on the cycle with both feet on the ground.

Despite being pulled over by Police, Robinson rode off without hesitation, heading south on Jubilee Road.

Police followed with sirens switched on, and Robinson eventually stopped his bike on Watlington Lane.

?He was unsteady on his feet, then fell to the ground,? Mrs. Vaucrossen said.

When Police asked if he had been drinking he replied: ?Well, yeah.?

At the station, he refused to give a breathalyser sample. ?No, I?ll just have to pay the fine,? he said.

Robinson was also disqualified from driving for 12 months.
