Storm knocks out cable

Repairs to cable knockouts in Sandys, Southampton and Smith's were expected to be completed last night, according to a Cablevision public relations representative.

The representative said Cablevision did not believe the damage, which was caused by lightning, was widespread. "It was a really bad storm," she added. "However of course we apologise to our customers for the inconvenience."

Power to be cut in Tucker's Town

Homes in Tucker's Town Road and Shore Lane will be without power from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today due to Bermuda Electric Light Company reinforcing existing underground equipment. The work will be delayed until tomorrow if the weather is bad.

Thief targets visitor's purse

A visitor from New York had her handbag stolen in Par-la-Ville park last week. A thief, dressed in baggy jeans and a white and red shirt, made off with her brown leather handbag filled with credit cards, a bank debit card, an undisclosed amount of cash, a New York State driver's licence and a host of other items after she set it down in the grass at the park.

The woman told Police she and a friend had been in the park for five minutes before the suspicious character made off with her belongings. The man is said to be in his 20s with dark skin and about five-foot-seven-inches-tall. Police are asking anyone with any information to call 295-0011.

Police report 23 accidents

The Island saw 23 accidents over the weekend a Police spokesman said yesterday.

He said there were 12 accidents which were damage only and the other 11 collisions involved people sustaining injuries.

The Police spokesman said that only one person was found to be driving while impaired.

Thieves make off with purses

A thief escaped with a woman's purse during the early hours of Saturday morning.

A Police spokesman said the complainant, of Tribe Road No. 2, Warwick, was woken at 3.15 a.m. on Saturday to find a stranger on her balcony.

She shouted at the intruder who jumped and ran off.

The woman later discovered that the thief had stolen her purse.

The man is described as being approximately six-foot tall, brown skinned and was wearing light coloured clothing.

Meanwhile, a thief stole $60 from a purse in a Smith's Parish home at the weekend.

A Police spokesman said the complainant, of Store Hill, was awoken at 4.30 a.m. on Saturday to find that someone had broken in and that his wife's purse was missing.

The purse was later found nearby, but minus the cash.

Justice Ward on the mend

Chief Justice Austin Ward has successfully completed heart surgery and is recuperating according to Supreme Court Registrar Charlene Scott.

Mr. Ward, 67, was flown off the Island last week for the surgery - believed to be a triple-bypass - at Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore.

Ms Scott could not say when Mr. Ward would be returning to the Island.

"I spoke with him today and he sounded to be in good spirits," Ms Scott said yesterday afternoon. "And he's on the mend."
