A man was found bleeding from head, back and arm injuries in Hamilton Parish early on Wednesday morning but refused to co-operate with Police.

He was sitting on the sidewalk outside Dub City Variety Store on Crawl Hill at 12.40 a.m. when Police arrived after a gang assault. The man, who is from the area, was rushed to hospital and had surgery for serious cuts to his left eye, lip, back and right arm which appear to be the result of a machete attack.

Earlier Police had gone to stop a fight at Hamilton Parish Workmen?s Club but arrived to see men running off. A witness said a local man had hit another man with a pipe. Police are linking the two incidents.

The trial of an alleged drug mule, who holds a UK passport but lives in Germany, remained in legal arguments yesterday.

Jamie Edward Cox, 27, of Gehard Street, Altenkessel in Germany, denies four charges of importation and possession with intent to supply of cannabis and cocaine on July 20, 2003.

The trial is expected to continue this morning.

A Sandys man caught carrying a plastic bag filled with cannabis was told that responsible people don?t use drugs when he appeared to face the charges in Magistrates? Court yesterday.

The court heard that Lloyd Shahryan Telford, 22, of Seawall Drive, Sandys, was initially stopped for traffic offences on May 24, 2004, when Police officers discovered a plastic bag in his shorts containing 3.71 grams of cannabis. Telford pleaded guilty to the offence and paid a total of $1,800 for traffic and the drug offences.

Magistrate Ed King told Telford that ?responsible people do not deal in drugs? and: ?The scourge of illicit drugs must be treated harshly whether the defendant is a resident or tourist in this jurisdiction.?

Telford was also charged with not fastening his helmet properly and disobeying a stop sign.

A Pembroke man who swallowed a paper twist containing cannabis and assaulted a Police Officer was fined $2,6000 in Magistrates? Court yesterday.

The court heard that Zeno Warner, 20, of Middle Town Lane, was found with a twist of plant material in the right pocket of his trousers. On October 4, Police Officer Jamie Eli stopped Warner as he was riding along Palmetto Road in Devonshire.

Although Warner was initially stopped for a traffic offence ? riding without third party insurance ? Officer Eli noticed he was fidgeting and kept putting his hand in his pocket. He was also charged with obstructing Officer Eli as he was exercising his duties, assaulting the officer and violently resisting arrest.

Crown counsel Cindy Clarke told the court that when officers attempted to arrest Warner and reach for the item in his pocket he ?lashed out? with his hands and feet. Warner also faced charges for riding his cycle without third party insurance and not having a valid driver?s licence.

A homeless man who stole a $35 case of Stella Artois beer from the Western Stars Sports Club was fined $150 in Magistrates? Court yesterday.

Andrew Gavin Arorash, 33, told Magistrate Edward King that he was sorry for stealing the beers and that he hoped the court would sentence him leniently. ?I didn?t go in there to do anything,? he said. ?I went in the club and saw that someone had broken the door off its hinges.?

Arorash said he had been employed as a groundskeeper at the club but had finished his final day of employment there the day before the incident. ?I?m very sorry for taking the beer from the bottom to the top of my heart,? he said.
