And next Wednesday's ceremony will mark the last time that the Sports Awards year will run from October 1 to September 31. Instead, with the January 1994 ceremony athletes will be honoured for their performances in the previous 12 months -- January to December of this year.
Next week's ceremony will take place in the Pembroke Room at the Hamilton Princess hotel starting at 6.30 p.m. It will be telecast live on ZBM TV-9.
The Sports Awards Programme aims to indentify and recognise the competitive athletic achievements of Bermuda's athletes and to recognise those persons who have made contributions to the development and achievement of sport in a non-competitive capacity.
There are five categories of recognition, the Athlete of the Year, Sports Citation, Appreciation Award, Special Achievement Award and Achievement Award.
Eight awards will be presented by Premier John Swan at next week's ceremony.
The programme is administered by the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation.
CRICKET CRI The Rest of the West Indies v Bermuda Cricket Umpires match will be held today at Somerset starting at 1.00. Randy Butler will captain the Bermuda umpires and Muhammad Hosein of Trinidad will lead the visiting umpires in the 40 overs contest.

SOCCER SOC There will be a meeting tonight for all Somerset Trojans' senior and junior players, and those wishing to transfer at the club starting at 7 p.m.
All players wishing to transfer to North Village for the new season must turn their transfer registration forms to the the club no later than tomorrow. No players will be considered after that date and for more information contact Sherwin Dill, the sports committee chairman, at 292-3092.
BOXING BOX Promoter Eddy DeMello has gained the rights to show the World Boxing Organisation heavyweight title fight between George Foreman and Tommy Morrison on June 7.
The undercard will tentatively feature Carlos Gonzalez against Roger Mayweather in a junior welterweight title fight and 1992 Olympic gold medallist Oscar De La Hoya against Darryl Tyson in the lightweight division.
DeMello said that three venues are being negotiated.
