House: Appeal for Lefroy House repairs

Derrick Burgess

Shadow Seniors Minister Derrick Burgess has led calls in the House of Assembly for the roof of Lefroy House to be repaired.

The roof of the Somerset nursing home was damaged last October when Bermuda was hit by back to back hurricanes in the space of a week.

Mr Burgess said that the required remediation work had not been done for “far too long”. While PLP MP, Michael Scott, echoed the sentiments saying that the work to Lefroy House should be “urgently prioritised”.

In a response to the Health Minister Jeanne Atherden’s presentation on the department’s budget Mr Burgess suggested cameras be installed in all residential care homes to deter elder abuse.

He also called for homes to have a dietitian on staff to prepare meals for residents. “This is not about politics. It’s about our senior citizens.

“I want to help as much as I can. If a law was enacted where I had to pay $5 or $10 a week towards our senior’s care I have no problem with that. “At present we have a home for child abuse, we need one for our elder abuse victims too — there is no safe house for them and we have got to address that.”
