Woman faces 35 charges in $68,000 fraud

A 27-year-old woman, who allegedly stole over $68,000, was charged with 35 counts of fraud in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Mekeba Peets, of Devonshire, was not required to enter a plea as the matters will heard in the Supreme Court.

The first charge was for theft, the charges numbered two to 20 were for forging bank cheques and the charges numbered 21 to 35 were for altering documents. All the offences are said to have taken place between November 22, 2002 and May 22, 2003, and the total amount stolen from Computer Systems Ltd. was $68,144.

Crown counsel Juan Wolffe urged Peets be held on conditional bail and surrender her travel documents.

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves set bail at $10,000 with a like surety and set the matter down for mention on January 14.

Peets had to surrender all travel documents by three o'clock yesterday.

Man denies charge of cocaine possession

A man was charged with being in possession of cocaine with the intent to supply yesterday in Magistrates' Court.

Raymond Burgess, 25, of Pembroke, pleaded not guilty to the charges and opted for the matters to be heard in Magistrates' Court.

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves released Burgess on $1,500 bail and set the matter down for trial on February 17.

Youth given lesson in court etiquette

A man who refused to stand when his bail was being discussed was ordered to stand up for the remainder of the Plea Court session in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Javon Weeks, 19, of My Lord's Bay Road, Hamilton Parish, pleaded not guilty to unlawful assault and four charges of unlawful damage, which allegedly occurred on October 23 last year. Weeks opted for a Magistrates' Court trial, rather than a trial in Supreme Court.

Crown counsel Shade Subair objected to bail, but Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves allowed it and set bail at $2,500 with a like surety. Mr. Greaves asked him to stand up, but Weeks continued to sit.

"If you want a place to sit down, I can give you a place," said Mr. Greaves. "And stand up properly too." Weeks stood up, sucked his teeth and sighed as the other cases were heard.

Weeks will stand trial on February 18.
