Do you think the Premier deserves his new home?

Mixed thoughts came from the streets of Hamilton yesterday on Premier Alex Scott?s planned move to the former Chief Justice?s house in Devonshire.

?I think that he should stay in his own house and Government should be doing more for the people,? said Tammy DeCouto.

?They should make sure children are not going hungry in school by providing them with food. Why don?t they do something for their people? It is blatant.?

Laura Ball agreed: ?If there is no real need to move, then he should stay where he is and save the country?s money. He should lead by example and save money where he can. It would be refreshing to see him stay where he is. The Police force needs more money. If the salaries of two new Police officers can be paid then he should stay in his own house.?

A different view came from Lloyd Smart: ?He?s got a mandate from the people and he should move. It is fine if he wants to stay in the comfort of his own home, but the head of Government should have a nicer house.?

Kathy Rowntree said: ?He deserves to have a better place.?

When asked how she feels about taxpayers have to fund the move she said: ?We have done it in the past. He deserves the same right of passage.?

Some people brought up the point that most countries have official residences for their leaders.

Tony Forster said: ?I am ambivalent about it. Apparently, it happens in every other country, so, why not here? Bermuda is a very special place and we should hold our Premiers in very high esteem.?

Arthur Jones said: ?We have done it under previous Government?s. For example Jennifer Smith. Tax payers paid for her to live where she did.?

?I have no problem with it,? said Steve Thomson. ?He should live in a decent house and one that we all respect.?

Troy Burgess gave a unique view: ?He should take advantage of it. The Opposition will probably try to snatch it from him.?

Lindsey Ternent said: ?I think the Premier makes enough money to pay for his own residence. Taxpayers pay enough already. Our money should go towards more useful things like education and tourism.?

John McNamara admitted to not knowing all the facts: ?I don?t really know the issue so, I can?t make an educated comment. But if he is just moving for a nicer house it seems unfair that taxpayers will have to pay for it.?

Bradlene Thompson mentioned status: ?My first reaction was that it is good because there has never been a Bermudian in that house. If all Premiers from here on live in that house then that is a great experience.?
