Huddersfield fans back need for new striker
Sixty per cent of Huddersfield Town fans said in a recent poll that they think the club needs to buy another striker, which is what Chris Powell, their manager, has said was a priority.
Depending on who they sign, it could be a good move for top scorer Nahki Wells, even though he has not been starting lately.
Wells, who marks his first year at the club this weekend, was bought from Bradford City to partner James Vaughan, but the pair have featured for the full 90 minutes of the same match just once — at Blackpool last March. They have been together on the pitch for just 207 more minutes, spread over seven games since Wells’s record £1.3?million transfer last January.
“We will get there with them as a partnership,” Powell said. “Obviously James has had his injury problems, and hopefully he is now over them.
“We have often used Nahki from the bench, and as I keep saying, it’s a 14-man game these days. Nahki needs to play with a partner rather than as a lone striker. But he and James are quite similar, so we need to work with them to develop that partnership.
“It’s something we will do, and we need to get to the stage where when they play as a pair, they actually play as a pair.”
Grant Holt’s return to Sky Bet Championship side Wigan Athletic after his loan period has left Huddersfield lacking in experience up front.
Rumours are swirling around as to possible new signings with Carlton Cole, the West Ham United striker, named as a possible target. Two other strikers mentioned as possible targets for Huddersfield are Nadir Ciftci, Dundee United’s Turkish striker, and Leicester City’s frontman Chris Wood.
The manager has accepted work needs to be done on a Wells-Vaughan partnership, and alternative options are always welcome.
It has been suggested that Wells plays better alongside a big target man, which is why rumours of a swoop for James Hanson, his former strike partner at Bradford, refuse to go away.
Carlton Cole’s chances have been limited with the return from injury of Andy Carroll.
Cole’s most recent appearance came in a 2-1 win at West Bromwich Albion on December 2. He was also in the 18 for the Boxing Day visit to his first club Chelsea.
