With a little help from my friends
Clusters of jellyfish and a near run-in with a speed boat failed to prevent a round-the-Island charity fundraiser from going swimmingly. Sean O'Connell was last night celebrating after 55 swimmers over 20 legs helped recreate his famous 1976 feat, when he became the first man to swim round the Island solo non-stop.
This weekend's relay swim marked the 30th anniversary of his unprecedented achievement. Organiser Nick Strong, of the Bermuda Masters Swimming Association, estimated the two-day event would raise between $12,000 and $15,000 for the Bermuda Physically Handicapped Association. And despite a smack of jellyfish off Devonshire Bay and a skirmish with a power boat off Pompano, 39 kilometres was swum amid rain showers on Saturday and yesterday's 29 kilometre target was swum in perfect conditions.
