Beenie Man fails to impress
Hundreds of people flocked to St. David?s to see Grammy Award winning artiste Beenie Man perform. However, they couldn?t have guessed that he would DJ for most of the night instead of performing.
Beenie Man, born Moses Davis, performed under the mega-tent last Tuesday night as a part of E.N.V.Y. Productions concert series. The show attracted many people as the expectations for Beenie Man were very high.
Beenie Man came on stage dressed in pink and white complete with pink timberland boots and a white, pink and silver glittered hat. He joined local DJs Souljah One and played music for the crowd. This continued for almost an hour upsetting patrons, who paid $50 for a ticket in advance and $65 at the gate. This annoyed people because they didn?t pay to see Beenie Man DJ, they paid to see him sing and dance.
After a while he grabbed the mic and performed many of his old songs as well as new. He performed ?Who Am I?, ?Dude?, ?Row Like A Boat?, ?King of The Dancehall?, ?Romie?, ?Memories? and many more favourites. Beenie Man had the crowd hyped and encouraged them to dance and wave with him. The energy level was high as patrons hopped over a small fence to be closer to the stage.
After his performance, Beenie Man went back up to the turntables and played more music. This again bothered people because it was frustrating to pay so much money for a performing artiste for him not to perform at his highest level.
Beenie Man?s actual performance wasn?t bad. The crowd sang along to his songs and did the dances as well. He definitely livened up the atmosphere. He danced to a few of his songs and ran around the stage with the camera man to ensure that he captured the best parts of the show.
Backstage, I had the opportunity to question the artist on his choice to DJ more than actually perform. Beenie Man said: ?I would have preferred a live band which wasn?t available ... it?s all about the riddims?. He also said that he played more music instead of performing because he didn?t have all the riddims that he needed.
The local acts who performed failed to impress a tough Bermudian crowd. Squeeky Dun, Loc Tight and Turk were some of the acts that did not leave a great impression on the crowd. However Souljah One played good music in the beginning and received praise for it.
Overall, the show failed to meet expectations. Beenie Man is known for his high energy performances which I did not see on Tuesday night. Hopefully the next E.N.V.Y. concert will be worth the money with the performing artiste actually performing the duration of the show.
