Bermuda Folk Club to remember Gibbons

Well liked: The late Paul Gibbons

A greatly missed singer who was heavily involved in the Bermuda Folk Club until his death in 2003, will be remembered this Saturday at the club.

The annual Paul Gibbons Evening returns as a tribute to the singer and guitarist who was a regular performer and former president of the club.

The folk club will meet at the Spanish Point Boat Club on Saturday, with doors open at 7.30pm and music starting at 8pm.

Mr Gibbons was a former student of Saltus Grammar. When lessons were over he would often play guitar with Chris Broadhurst, who also emerged as one of the Island’s musical talents.

The Bermuda Folk Club started in the early 1970s, and it was later in the decade that Mr Gibbons took voice lessons from his friend Mr Broadhurst and was eventually persuaded to perform at the club. He made his debut in 1985.

At the club he met his future bands mates, who formed the group Last Rights. Other members of the band were vocalist Owen Burgess, lead guitarist Keith Phillips, bass player Mark Burgess and drummer Jamie Petty. They performed in the Park Summer series for about a decade. Last Rights’ song Chained to the Rock appeared on the Ride the Wave CD.

Mr Gibbons also helped young guitarists and singers, sometimes accompanying them on stage. He played for charity events and helped local organisations with fund raising, one of these was Eddie Ming’s Drum School in St George’s. He belonged to Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

His final performance with Last Rights was at Horseshoe Bay in April 2003.

Funds raised at the Folk Club on Saturday will go towards the Bermuda School of Music.

All are welcome. Entrance at the door is $10.
