Health secretary appointed

The Public Service Commission has announced that as of March 1, Mr. Carlyle Musson will be Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Social Services, and Housing.

Mr. Musson, who has been assistant Financial Secretary in the Ministry of Finance since 1991, will take on the duties presently being carried out by Chief Medical Officer Dr. John Cann.

Since former Permanent Secretary of the Health Ministry, Mr. Edward Dyer, left last July to become Prisons Commissioner, Dr. Cann was left responsible for the administrative work of the Permanent Secretary.

With Mr. Musson in place, Dr. Cann is expected to concentrate more on clinical work, including AIDS-related issues.

Mr. Musson was educated at the Berkeley Institute.

He obtained an electrical engineering degree in 1969 at the University of Manitoba, after winning a Government scholarship.

He began his working career at the Bermuda Electric Light Company (Belco) in 1969, but left the following year to join GN Haden & Sons, consulting engineers in London, England.

In May, 1971, Mr. Musson won a Commonwealth Fellowship and resumed his studies at the University of Toronto. He obtained a Master's degree in Business Administration from there in 1973.

Mr. Musson worked in Toronto for Price, Waterhouse for two years, and then for Imperial Oil Limited for 14 years.

In February, 1988, he returned to Bermuda to become Budget director.

Mr. Musson is married to the former Janette Dill and has one son, Kai.
