Irate motorist pays $1,000 for cursing Police on phone
A man who left abusive rants on Police answerphones after losing his temper over traffic checkpoints has been fined.
Richard Harold Lines, 32, pleaded guilty yesterday at Magistrates' Court to two charges of using a telephone to leave offensive messages.
Prosecutor Takiyah Burgess told the court that the administrative assistant to the Commissioner of Police George Jackson received a call from an "irate" Lines at 9 a.m. on September 10.
He complained about the Police pulling over traffic on Middle Road in Paget, and the assistant tried to reason with him and took his details down.
However, Ms Burgess said that when the lady checked the telephone messages, she found a voicemail from Lines at 8.51 a.m. complaining about the same thing.
The prosecutor described the assistant as being "appalled" by the profanity he used in the message, including saying "it's a f*****g" joke".
In addition, Police Inspector Bothello found another message from Lines, left at 8.42 a.m., calling the traffic officers "f*****g morons" and "f*****g idiots".
Telephone records showed all three calls were made from the defendant's cell phone.
The court heard from Ms Burgess that Lines is married, and describes himself as an "entrepreneur" with a business overseas.
The defendant, from Overplus Lane, Sandy's, pleaded guilty to two charges of sending grossly offensive messages when he appeared at court yesterday.
He told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that his business in Oklahoma, which involves typing and distributing students' notes, was going badly at the time.
Lines explained that his business partner had left him "high and dry", he was having credit card problems and faced a lawsuit for copyright violations.
"I was under a ridiculous amount of stress," he told Mr. Warner. "I admit that what I did was completely stupid. It was the straw that broke the camel's back."
The maximum punishment for the offences, according to Ms Burgess, is a year in jail, a $2,000 fine, or both.
Mr. Warner opted to fine Lines $1,000.
