Obituary: Mary S. Flanders
Mary S. Flanders, 98, of 66 South Road, died Sunday, June 9, 2002 at her home. She was the widow of Dr. Robert Flanders, who died in 1971.
Mrs. Flanders was born in Manchester, New Hampshire on July 13, 1903, daughter of the late William Parker & Josephine (Perkins) Straw.
Raised in Manchester, she was educated at Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut, Class of 1922.
After graduation, she spent a year at the American School in Florence, Italy.
In 1955 Mrs. Flanders served as National President of the Women's Auxiliary of the American Medical Association. She was a member of the New Hampshire Chapter of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, president of the Girls Club in Manchester, and President of the Elliot Hospital Associates in Manchester from 1940 to 1942.
She was active in many community organisations in Manchester and Warwick, Bermuda, where she and her late husband resided for 35 years.
For the past 13 years she had lived in Venice, Florida and Rye Beach where she has had her daughter-in-law, Dorothy Flanders, as a constant and loyal companion.
Family members include a son, Dr. Robert Flanders, Jr. and his wife Susan of Englewood, Florida, a daughter, Mary Flanders Cook and her husband Bert of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, ten grandchildren, and seventeen great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Charles F. Flanders, a daughter, Gretchen Flanders Schleyler , and a great granddaughter, Amanda Hutchens .
Services will be held at St. Andrew's By-The-Sea , Church Road, Rye Beach, New Hampshire tomorrow at 2 p.m.
