Newborn dolphin dies
Dolber of Dolphin Quest has shocked the educational and tourism facility in Southampton.
The newborn died moments after birth at the Dolphin Quest habitat at the Southampton Princess yesterday.
It died after passing through the birth canal head first. Dolphins are usually born tail first allowing respiration via the umbilical cord during delivery.
Dolber had never successfully delivered a live calf but yesterday's loss has heartened Dolphin Quest administrators.
Veterinarian Robert Braun said: "We are encouraged by the fact that Dolber was able to deliver a live calf for the first time and made a good effort to care for it.'' He added: "Should she become pregnant again this is likely to improve her chances of success in the future.'' Dolber is resting and interacting with her trainers and fellow dolphins, including Cirrus, who is pregnant.
