Premier, Ministers at KPMG infrastructure summit

A Bermuda delegation led by Premier Craig Cannonier is in Miami attending the KPMG Infrastructure Summit.Also in attendance at the summit, which began yesterday, are Minister of Tourism Development and Transport Shawn Crockwell, Minister of Public Works Trevor Moniz, Minister of Environment and Planning Sylvan Richards and his Permanent Secretary Dr. Derrick Binns, General Manager of the LF Wade International Airport, Aaron Adderley and Chief Engineer for the Ministry of Public Works, Mr. Peter Havlicek.The summit will be held through tomorrow at the JW Marriott Marquis in Miami and will bring together banks and other financing institutions, developers, investors, and public sector leaders, a Government statement said.“Summit attendees will discuss various Island infrastructure projects and will explore how island economies can use alternative financing models, such as public private partnerships (PPPs), to achieve accelerated infrastructure development that drives economic growth,” the statement said.“The Summit will feature ‘lessons learned’ across island jurisdictions and from some of the industry’s most experienced infrastructure professionals regarding issues such as managing risk and meeting timelines as well as selecting the right investment, construction, and technology partners.”Premier Cannonier commented: “Our presence at the KPMG Summit will be extremely beneficial to Bermuda for a number of reasons. Not only does it give us the chance to hear what chief infrastructure projects our neighbours are undertaking, it will also give us the opportunity to discuss some of our own upcoming projects and gather valuable information which will lead to optimally informed decisions.”The Premier, along with the heads of various other countries, will take part in a panel discussion regarding the current infrastructure challenges facing their respective countries and how they are prioritising their infrastructure for economic growth from a policy perspective.Minister Moniz will be a part of a panel that will speak to infrastructure projects recently completed in Bermuda, such as Heritage Wharf.Chief Engineer for the Ministry of Public Works Peter Havlicek and the Airport GM Aaron Adderley will both present on infrastructure projects such as the LF Wade International Airport and the Causeway..Other notable conference attendees from oversees include: Dr. Orlando Smith, Premier and Finance Minister of the Virgin Islands; Dr. Rufus Ewing, Premier and Minister of Tourism, Turks and Caicos Islands; and Alden McLaughlin, Premier of The Cayman Islands & Minister for Home and Community Affairs.This Summit is the third KPMG Infrastructure Summit that Bermuda has attended.For more information about the conference please visit: www.kpmgislandinfrastructure.com
