Toriano's death is like losing a brother, says racer Simons

“The Animal”: Toriano tears up the track while riding in the Red Bull AMA US Rookies Cup.

Motorcyle racer Jevaughn "Squirrel" Simons paid tribute to his close friend Toriano Wilson describing his death to like "losing a brother".

Wilson, 14, was tragically killed after sustaining fatal injuries in an accident in the Red Bull AMA US Rookies Cup at Virginia International Raceway on Sunday.

The talented youngster, nicknamed "The Animal", came off his bike during the first lap of the race and was struck by another rider as he attempted to get back on his machine.

Simons, a 600 Superbike Novice champion on the WERA National Series in the US, stressed that all riders understand the risks of competing but do it because it's something they love. He said Wilson possessed "excellent intelligence" and would have undoubtedly become a world-class rider.

"I don't know where to start," said Simons. "He wasn't old enough to ride a bike legally but his intelligence was excellent.

"He was a great kid with massive potential.

"We came up in the 125cc class together where he often started at the back of the pack and gradually worked his up to the front.

"When he went to test for Red Bull, that was his calling and it was a fantastic opportunity for him to excel in the sport he loved.

"He then led testing in a field of the best young riders from around the world. That showed that his talent had improved and he was on his way to big things.

"In Laguna Seca racetrack, Florida, he was number one, and from then on he improved a great deal.

"His top ten finishes were a testament to his dedication. A top ten finish is a huge deal out there in terms of sponsors and so forth."

Simmons admitted that danger was part and parcel of motorcycle racing, but insisted that deaths were still a freakish occurrence.

"In the sport of Moto, just like in NASCAR, it's a chance that anyone takes.

"The only way it happens is a freak type deal, as tracks are usually safe for riders.

"At the beginning of my season I had someone pass away during one of my races.

"My heart goes out to Toriano's family and close friends at this difficult time."
