Conditional discharge for pregnant thief

A pregnant mother of four has received a conditional discharge for her involvement in a Buzz Cafe burglary.

Crystl Smith, 31, was also given two years probation for stealing $750 cash from the restaurant on Bakery Lane, in Pembroke.

The Southampton woman, who once worked for Buzz, said she was motivated by the need to pay for new clothes for her children.

Smith and her accomplice, Garrett Burroughs, 47, of Pembroke, admitted in Magistrates’ Court last month to unlawfully entering the cafe in the early hours of September 7 and stealing a Bank of Butterfield money pouch containing the company’s “float money” for the day.

Prosecutor Susan Mulligan told the court Smith and Burroughs were arrested after CCTV footage was reviewed by management, and one of the waitresses recognised mother-of-four Smith, who has another child on the way.
