True battle of the ages
There may only be a year or two between some players on either side but it's still going to be a battle of the "ages" when The Annual Men's Over/Under 35's Doubles competition takes place on Sunday.
Will the Overs "over-come" the Unders and just who are the "under-dogs" in this event? All these questions and more will be answered at the Tennis Stadium where the tournament serves off at 3 p.m.
In what is sure to be a series of exciting match-ups, some of the top seeds in Bermudian tennis, such as James Collieson, Jenson Bascome and Ryan Swan will stand across the net from those in whose footsteps they follow, including Ricky Mallory, Michael Way and David Lambert.
Tournament regulations stipulate players who were 36 by January 1 this year represent the Over-35 team while all those under 36, by the same date, will be on the Under-35 team.
"The intent is to get the best 28 Men's doubles players on the Island out for this event. We will pick the players who have been successful in doubles in BLTA-sanctioned tournaments and in the BLTA Winter Doubles League.
"We will also look at people who have in the past been very good doubles players but who might be less active in tennis now," said Bill Way who, though well past his 30s, is the non-playing captain of the Under-35 team.
Rankings will be done on either team in order of player strength with the No. 1 doubles combination being the strongest and the No. 7 team being the least strong. There will be seven doubles matches starting with No. 7s, No. 6s and No. 5s opposing each other and culminating with feature match of the No. 1 seeds on either side battling each other. All matches will be the best of three sets and the 12-point tie-breaker if a set reaches 6-6. The tournament is sponsored by John Barritt & Son Limited.
The Over-35 team will be chosen from the following players: Michael Way, Ricky Mallory, Brian Way, Stuart Smith (captain), David Lambert, Earl Leader, Andrew Kennedy, Alec Anderson, Eldon Daniels, Jerome Bradshaw, Colie Place, Vernal Davis, Steve Bean, Bruce Robinson, Price Lowenstein, Blair Rance, Nick Frost, Johnny Moore, Martin Zolnai, John Johnston and Eric Collins.
The Under-35 team will be chosen from the following players: James Collieson, Gregg Frigerio, Mark Cordeiro, Jenson Bascome, Chris Harris, Courtland Boyle, Roger Marshall, Jovan Whitter, Ryan Swan, Chris Watson, Chase Toogood, Richard Boyle, Quinton Burgess, Karl Roberts, Romar Douglas, Andrew Watson and John Masters. Bill Way is the non-playing captain.
