Ming and Phillips to carry on momentum

Good form: Phillips

Kaylah Ming and Imani Phillips will be hoping their good form of late spills over into the International Tennis Federation’s Junior Circuit Junkanoo Bowl in Nassau, Bahamas.

The pair impressed at last week’s Bank of Bermuda Foundation ITF Junior Circuit Tournament, Ming capturing the girls’ Under 14 singles title before teaming up with Phillips, who lost to her compatriot in the singles final, to win the doubles title.

“We hope that Kaylah and Imani will be just as successful in Nassau at that age group as they were in Bermuda,” David Lambert, the Elbow Beach tennis director, said.

Also representing Bermuda in the Caribbean are David Leader, Luke Sterling, David Gibbons, Scott Redman, Mathias Delage and Maria Ramirez.

The Island team, which is made up entirely of players from Elbow Beach Tennis Club’s junior programme, is being coached by Bermuda Fed Cup pair and siblings Tara and Jackie Lambert and Chris Weeks.

Gibbons, Redman, Delage and Ramirez are all competing in the boys and girls 14 and Under age group, which consists of a round robin format, with the top four boys and girls advancing to the knockout stage.

Leader and Sterling are attempting to qualify for the main event in the boys’ under-18 Division.

Lambert has high expectations for the local contingent.

“We feel the team have prepared at a high level and if they play up to their full potential they should have good results and we wish them well,” Lambert said.

“The boys in their age group have played very well this season. They have all been very active in a lot of tournaments and Pepperidge Farm Series all season so they are going into this tournament with some momentum. The most important thing is these juniors are travelling to Nassau to play in another ITF ranking tournament after competing in Bank of Bermuda Foundation Tournament here last week.

“We feel that is very important for that additional exposure and hopefully they will also acquire world ranking points.”

The Junkanoo Bowl will be played on hard court at the National Tennis Centre in Nassau July 7 to 12.

It is a grade 4 tournament whereas as last week’s Bank of Bermuda Foundation ITF Junior Circuit Tournament was a grade 5, which is a level below.
