It looks like a dump.

And with people deliberately transporting their trash there and leaving it at all hours of the day, it?s not hard to figure out why.

But it?s not a dump. It is someone?s yard. In fact, ironically, it is the yard of 91-year-old Phyllis West-Harron, a founding member and former president of Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB), and her daughter, Aramynta West.

The pair are now politely asking people to treat their property as they would treat their own.

Ms West contacted on Tuesday after a particularly gruelling attempt to clean up her yard. ?It?s just awful,? she said in frustration. ?I?m starting to take it personally. It looks personal.?

People have been dumping their trash in her mother?s property, bordered by Radnor Road and Peters Road in Hamilton Parish, for years ? often un-bagged, and on any day of the week, not just trash days.

?There?s thousands and thousands of broken bottles... condoms, sanitary napkins, used diapers.

?There?s construction rubble that has been dumped on the property, mixed in with the garbage.?

There has been no construction in the immediate neighbourhood recently, she added ? meaning that the dumpers had to deliberately transport the rubble to her property and leave it there.

Toxic waste such as car batteries and paint cans litter her hillside, alongside car engines, helmets, an empty gas container, carpet, a shopping cart, furniture and concrete from somebody?s roof.

Rats delight in the mess, and what trash is bagged is often split open by neighbourhood dogs, including, Ms West admitted, her own dog.

?It?s always been a sore spot,? she said. ?Especially because of the cost of removing it.?

She had been told that to get the trash removed would run into the thousands of dollars, she said. ?But finally we just decided to bite the bullet.?

The trash will be removed sometime in the upcoming weeks.

?The guys picking it up said they have never seen anything like it.?

Ms West added she plans to concrete the corner of the property at the junction of Radnor and Peters roads to allow Peters Road residents to leave their garbage there, as that is where they have to leave it anyway ? so long as they leave it properly bagged and on trash days only.

As for the neighbours along Radnor Road, she and her mother only hope they stop the dumping.

?I?m just hoping people will respect it when I ask that they don?t put it here anymore,? she said. ?It?s gotten worse and worse.?
