The annual National Trust Palm Sunday walk will see participants trekking through Devonshire and Smith's Parish tomorrow.

The walk beginning at 2 p.m. will start at the Somersfield Academy sports field on Middle Road in Devonshire.

The walk will continue in to Devonshire's “high country” including the “North Shore Railway Trail, through agricultural landscapes, on to the South Shore vistas, down narrow lanes and forest trails, and finally through Penhurst Park”.

Walkers will also learn about Bermuda's natural and cultural history with a flyer provided by the National Trust at the beginning of the walk.

The free walk has attracted over 2,000 participants in previous years but the Trust warned walkers it is “strenuous” and the route is on off-road paths.

Walking shoes with non-slip tread are recommended as are walking. No dogs or wheeled vehicles are permitted.

There will be two refreshment stops and toilets are located at the beginning and the end of the walk. For further information about the walk contact Peter Drew or Amy Scott at 236-6483.

Philip wins kite prize

Philip Dunlea, a Primary Two student at Warwick Academy, will be presented with a $500 grand prize donation for his school after winning the Belco Bird Kite Safety Poster Competition.

At 3 p.m. on Wednesday the Belco bird will present Philip with the prize money and a Bermuda-made kite for winning the competition.

Philip's poster was chosen as Best Overall from all of the entries sent to Belco from the local Primary One and Primary Two students.

Homes approved

Property developer Gilbert Lopes has been given the go-ahead to build four new homes in Trewlawney Lane, Pembroke.

The Development Applications Board approved the plan, but stated Mr. Lopes must make provision for the disposal of storm water, so it does not run onto a public or estate road, and provide four parking spaces.

And Arthur Jones, acting for the Smith Family Trust, has been given planning permission to build three homes in Lot 2, off Hilton Drive, Paget. The Trust has been given approval in principle and must provide a woodland management plan.

Hotel bar turned down

Cambridge Beaches has been refused Planning permission to build a new bar at its existing beach restaurant overlooking Daniel's Head.

The Development Applications Board rejected the plan - and one for a locker for water sports equipment - because they would be located within a woodland conservation area on the Somerset site.

Cambridge Beaches owner Michael Winfield was off the Island on Thursday and could not be contacted for comment.

Thieves hit school

The new senior school was hit by tool thieves who stole a saw, a planer and a sander.

A Police spokesman said the victim, on Berkeley Road, Pembroke, thought the incident happened sometime between 6.45 p.m. on Wednesday and 7.30 a.m. on Thursday.

The tools were stored in a classroom and the items stolen were a Makita saw, a Black and Decker electric planer, a Makita palm sander, a Makita slide chop and saw, various other tools and a silver five-inch television.

Burglar thwarted

A man staying in a Rosemont Avenue guest house was awakened by a potential thief in the early hours of Friday morning.

A Police spokesman said the complainant said he heard noises at about 12.10 a.m. When he went to investigate he discovered a man in his room.

The man escaped as soon as he was seen, but is described as being black, five feet, ten inches tall, of slim build, a bald head or a very close haircut. He was wearing a blue-hooded sweat top.
