Police are investigating after two dogs dug up from a Pembroke back garden were found dead with their feet bound together.

It's thought the pair ? a two-year-old pit bull mother and her ten-month old puppy ? were either drowned or buried alive at the Shelton Road home.

Neighbours alerted dog wardens after seeing the home owner digging a hole a couple of weeks ago and then noticing the dogs were missing.

Assistant animal warden Harry Bean said if Police find evidence of cruelty, the courts can impose fines and even prison sentences.

Dog wardens began digging yesterday afternoon after obtaining a warrant and soon made the grisly discovery.

Assistant Animal Warden Fabian Minors said: "Basically this is a tragic incident."

He said the animal department collected unwanted dogs so the public did not need to take matters into their own hands.

And he urged worried members of the public to report suspected animal cruelty cases.
