Visitor fined for drug possession

A Hawaiian tourist who imported 2.86 grams of cannabis to the Island on December 15 was fined $500 yesterday.

Brian Hideo Morikuni, 42, Honolulu pleaded guilty to importing marijuana.

Crown counsel Charmaine Smith told the court that Morikuni had cleared Immigration and had gone into the Customs lounge where drug detection dogs took an interest in him.

Customs officers then searched his luggage, but no drugs were found.

The dog however took interest in his clothing and he was asked if he had been handling illegal substances and he denied that he had.

Police and Customs officers then searched him when cannabis was found in his rear trouser pocket.

The cannabis was in a clear plastic twist and there was also a half smoked marijuana cigarette.

Acting Magistrate Tyrone Chin fined him $500 to be paid immediately or 14 days in prison.
