Businessman wants to open variety store at Blue Hole Hill

A variety shop selling everyday groceries from dawn until midnight could soon be opening up on Blue Hole Hill in Hamilton Parish between the Grotto Bay Beach Resort and the Swizzle Inn.

The former glass blowing factory near the Causeway is set to re-open as a shop providing the idea of changing the use of the building from a retail hardware premises to a variety shop meets with approval from the Planning Board.

According to Jayson Harvey, who is behind the project, there will be no need to do any additional construction work to the building, which is on the south side of the road and has four car-parking spaces and a number of cycle parking spaces.

Mr. Harvey saw the property for rent and has previous experience of retailing, he also has a cousin in the business and realised the potential for the site due to its close proximity to the Grotto Bay hotel and its prime location for attracting passing trade to and from Bermuda International Airport and East End customers.

In the planning application, Mr. Harvey states it is hoped the Blue Hole Hill Variety shop will provide two full-time shops and sell a variety of goods such as bread, milk, soda and packaged foods.

The owner of a neighbouring property has indicated agreement to make available an additional six car-parking spaces if they are required for the business. The building has a total floor space of 3,540 square feet on two floors.
