Opposition Senate Leader Kim Swan yesterday said he had tabled a motion in Senate for the Government and the Opposition to debate the fate of Anchorage Road tenants.

This upcoming debate plans to examine the plans by Government ?to move away from the plan for renovating for leasing, to renovate (them) for sale,? he said.

Sen. Swan said he wanted to debate the future of the Anchorage Road homes to ?find out what Government?s real position is and this debate should bring new light to the current situation?.

When asked when the debate will take place, Sen. Swan said that the other Senators and himself ?will hold a caucus to determine that ... but it could be as early as Wednesday as this is a very topical issue?.

Sen. Swan said the debate would let them know ?what the Housing Minister has to say about it. We shall see if he will honour Government?s original commitment,? he said.

Housing Minister Ashfield DeVent could not be reached for comment by press time as he was embroiled in a debate in the House of Assembly on affordable housing.

However, when asked Mr. DeVent last month what the future of the Anchorage Road homes would be he said he did not know.

Also last month, Bermuda Housing Corporation chief Vance Campbell said plans to sell the St. George?s units for $600,000 to $700,000 announced last December were ?under review?.
