St. George's 1 Dandy Town 4
calling themselves the undisputed First Division champions after three goals in 18 minutes late in the game put paid to stubborn St. George's.
Just a day before the match the Bermuda Football Association awarded Town the points from last weekend's loss to North Village, a decision that effectively handed them their second league title before a ball had been kicked in this match.
But the intention of the visitors was to win anyway, just in case the North Village saga took another twist. And when they broke the deadlock as early as the fourth minute it looked like being another one of those easy Town wins.
However, the home team, with something to play for themselves -- namely a spot in the Martonmere Cup -- never allowed their opponents to run the match.
A smart piece of finishing by Carlos Greves in the closing minutes of the first half made it 1-1 and if it had stayed that way, especially with Village thrashing Southampton Rangers, the two points from last weekend's Village-Town would certainly have decided the championship.
Instead, Town wrapped it up on the field and Bruce Barritt of sponsors John Barritt and Son was waiting for them in the end with the shining league trophy in his hands.
Walter Musson was the man who shot Town into the lead when he finished off a good run down the right by Paul Cann by side-footing home from five yards. The match was played at a fast pace from the outset with St. George's showing a determination to compete with their opponents, just as they did in the corresponding fixture, which they won 1-0 at St. John's field.
Defender Phillip Bailey drove a long-range free kick over the bar as St.
George's kept in contention while at the other end Pernell Douglas put an effort across goal and just past the far post.
Town's top scorer Carlos Smith went close with a glancing header in the 32nd minute to keep the St. George's defence on their toes, while at the other end Carlos Greaves' hard running was causing the Town back four some problems.
Greaves ran onto a long clearance in the 36th minute, gained possession and then charged towards goal before getting off a shot that was blocked for a corner. Town defender Wylie Rudo took a knock on the head when the ball went forward and went off holding an ice pack to his head as Don Lewis replaced him.
A similiar long ball over the halfway line brought St. George's their equaliser in the 43rd minute. This time the pass came from Clay Smith, Greaves raced forward and then drove a first-time low shot from 25 yards neatly into Cymande Davis' right-hand corner.
That fine piece of finishing was a just reward for St. George's. But, though they started promising in the second half with Clay Smith putting a shot straight at the 'keeper, Town were soon back on the attack.
Carlos Smith went close to shooting Town back in front in the 58th minute after being put clear of the St. George's defence. However, goalkeeper Troy Hall made a timely save low to his right.
Clay Smith put a 30-yard free kick just wide as St. George's remained ambitious, and then in the 66th minute Greaves got on the end of a long cross from deep on the right by Marlon Outerbridge but the striker put his header straight at 'keeper Davis.
Two minutes later, Town regained the lead with a brilliant Musson goal and St.
George's quickly faded out of contention as the visitors produced a strong finish. The goal deserved to be the clincher, as Musson got on the end of a cross from the right by Douglas and volleyed powerfully back across goal and into the far top corner.
In the 78th minute, Davis went to his left to block a Dean Bailey shot and just seconds later at the other end Town pushed their noses farther in front when Paul Cann's shot towards an open goal hit the retreating Dean Bailey who forced it over the line.
Town were not content with a 3-1 scoreline, as coach Mark Trott urged Musson on towards a hat-trick. He did not get it but Musson played a hand in the goal with a long throw on the right, which was headed on by Wayne Campbell at the near post and substitute Darren Simons headed past Hall from close range.
St. George's, in suffering their biggest defeat of the season, slipped out of the first six for the first time in several weeks as both Vasco and PHC overhauled them, the former taking the last Martonmere Cup spot.

UP AND OVER -- Dandy Town's Troy Durham attempts an overhead shot at goal during yesterday's 4-1 win over St. George's. Town were declared league champions on Saturday, but put the matter beyond doubt with a convincing performance at Wellington Oval.
