National squad looking to test USA
National netball head coach Anthony Mouchette is confident his players will give a good account of themselves in their three-match series with hosts USA in the Atlantic Cup in Florida. The Island’s senior national squad are due to travel to Florida today ahead of tomorrow’s opening match with USA at the indoor Pompey Park Recreation Center in Delray Beach (7pm local time).Remaining matches will be held on Saturday (9:30am and 6:30pm).Asked of his expectations of the tour, Mouchette replied: “We hope to come back with a win. We are playing the best two out of three so hopefully if we can’t win all three then at least win two of them.”Team USA handed Bermuda a heavy defeat at July’s Americas Federation of Netball Association’s (AFNA) Championships in Trinidad and Tobago. However, the Americans have since been depleted by the loss of players from the Northeast still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. In contrast, Bermuda’s squad has been bolstered by the additions of the versatile Kirstin Saltus and seasoned veterans Gina Benjamin and Nina Webb. Webb’s daughter, Asante Chapman, who plays in the Surrey Junior Netball League in the UK, will join her Bermuda team-mates in Florida.“We have picked up players and have the league’s two top goalscorers (Danielle Raynor and Benjamin) in the squad so hopefully we can give our shooters the opportunity to shoot,” Mouchette said.“Our aim is to try and give them as many goalscoring opportunities as possible to put the ball away.”The former policeman and football referee has also formed a strategy to help shore up a defence that has leaked far too many goals in recent times than he’d prefer.“We have conceded too many goals so the intent is to apply more pressure on the ball and try and stop the ball from getting into the circle,” Mouchette said. “We intend to play man-to-man and apply more pressure on the person with the ball.“We will be a little more forceful and are going to play more direct and give our shooters more scoring opportunities.”Mouchette, who will be assisted by Jene Charles, said his players would arrive in Florida in good physical shape having fully committed themselves to a rigorous weekly training schedule in the lead-up to the two-day tournament.“Our preparations have been good,” he added. “We’ve been training twice a week.”Bermuda’s players have trained indoors to help get used to the conditions they will encounter in Florida.“The last couple of weeks we have been training inside the gym because the games are going to be played inside so we have accilmatised to the playing conditions, the flooring and everything else,” Mouchette said. “We have to make some minor adjustments, but nothing we can’t overhaul.”The tour of Florida is a must for the national squad who have to play one more match before the end of the year in order to reclaim International Federation of Netball (IFNA) ranking. Bermuda, who will be led on court by captain Karen Jones-Simmons, have not been ranked for several years. The squad are due to return home on Sunday.Bermuda: Karen Jones-Simmons (capt), Marissa Wainwright (v-capt), Danielle Raynor, Ebonie Burgess, Asante Chapman, Kajuna Lema, Chaquita Simmons, Arkeita Fubler, Gina Benjamin, Nina Webb, Kirstin Saltus.
