Six men have been charged with conspiring to smuggle $11 million worth of cannabis and $600,000 worth of heroin into the Island.

The charges were brought after an eight-month joint investigation between the Bermuda Police and the US Drug Enforcement Agency.

The six men, all Bermudians, are each charged with conspiring on July 17 last year to import cannabis and diamorphine into Bermuda. The second count, also taking place on July 17 last year, was of conspiring to break into the Number Seven Shed on Front Street with the intent to steal the drugs.

And the third count, taking place on or before July 17 last year, was of conspiring to possess cannabis and diamorphine with intent to supply.

The six Bermudians were not required to enter pleas as the charges are indictable and will be tried in Supreme Court.

The men were: Milford Eugene Waldron Sr., 59, of Long Bay Lane in Somerset, represented by Darrell Clarke; his son Milford Waldron Jr., 37, who lives with his father, represented by Mark Pettingill; Ramon Dwight Blanchette, 32, of Keith Hall Road in Warwick, still in the process of acquiring legal representation; Leon Eugene Burchall, 40, of Town Hill Road, in Smith's Parish, represented by Lawrence Scott; Michael James Denbrook, 49, of Cut Road, St. George's, represented by Kim Wilson; and his brother Ronald Denbrook, 43, of Cove Valley, St. George's, represented by Craig Attridge.

Crown counsel Graveney Bannister appeared in court for the Crown.

Although Mr. Bannister objected to bail, after Acting Magistrate Will Francis heard arguments from the defence lawyers, he granted bail to the six accused.

"This is a matter that has been ongoing for some nine months," he said.

However, in light of the charges, he set the bail amount at $25,000 each with one like surety.

The six were also ordered to surrender all their travel documents and report to Police every Monday and Friday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

They will return to Magistrates' Court for mention on April 16.
