A British MP has questioned why Cherie Blair, the wife of British Prime Minister Tony Blair, is to again enjoy a cut-price holiday at Government House when she comes to Bermuda later this month.

Mrs. Blair, her mother and three children had a week-long holiday at Government house, paying a nominal sum of around $50 a night when she came to speak at a Women in Public Life conference last October. The perk is available to guests of Governor Sir John Vereker.

The trip attracted criticism in British newspapers, coming at the time Mrs Blair, a leading barrister, was under fire for her links to an Australian fraudster, who helped her buy a flat in Bristol, England.

Mrs. Blair has also been attacked for getting free holidays and taking freebie gifts at home and abroad.

Australia's Daily Telegraph newspaper named her "Grabber Blair" after she helped herself to 68 items of clothing and accessories worth $3000 recently on a trip to Melbourne.

Mrs. Blair is coming to Bermuda again later this month to speak at the Bermuda Bar Association dinner at Commissioner's House.

Bermuda Bar Association confirmed it is paying for Mrs Blair's flights, but said she is arranging her own accommodation. The Advertiser newspaper in Australia reported yesterday that Mrs Blair will again be staying at Government House with her mother, two of her sons and one of her son's schoolfriends.

The news that Mrs Blair is supposedly staying at Government House subsidised by the tax-payer, attracted criticism from a British MP.

Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker said there should be an investigation into Mrs Blair's stay at Government House.

"The difference between Mrs Blair's public and private roles, and who pays the bills, is becoming increasingly murky and needs to be looked at," he told the mass circulation newspaper.

"Mrs Blair is certainly getting fantastic value for money and I shall be making inquiries to find out if the the same deal is available to my constituents.

"They would all love to stay is this mansion for $A84 a night. If Mrs Blair is in Bermuda mainly on private business then she should not be staying in a public residence."
