Expatriate workers planned for temporary dorm-style housing

Overseas Police officers and construction workers will have the opportunity to secure temporary dormitory style housing if plans are approved to convert old barracks in Southside into a hostel.

The Bermuda Land Development Corporation has filed the plans to build the 42-unit hostel at St. David's to provide accommodation for contract workers.

Initial plans show that there will be exercise facilities, kitchen, dining room and lounge area in the upper floor area of the existing barracks. Plans show that each bedroom contains two beds with an adjoining bathroom.

In January The Royal Gazette revealed that the bedroom units were being designed with renovation of the building slated to start this autumn, pending planning approval. BLDC manager Patrick Jones said he hoped the units would be available for rent at below $1,850 per month. Mr. Jones did not return phone calls yesterday.
