More high winds expected today
Bermuda has been buffeted by two storms in the space of a week — and more windy weather is on the way today.
But meteorologist Ken Smith, from Bermuda Weather Service, said yesterday that gale force conditions were not expected. He said winds increasing from 25 to 30 knots were predicted this afternoon, with gusts up to 40 knots.
A gale warning would only be put in place, he explained, if there were sustained winds of at least 34 knots.
The near-gale force winds are due to a cold front approaching from the west, which will also bring showery rain.
A duty officer at Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre said last night that a small craft warning was in place from yesterday through to tomorrow afternoon.
"Conditions have improved through today," he said. "People have had a chance, I'm sure, to get out and look at their boats and check the moorings.
"It's going to be another spell of poor weather tomorrow, starting from tomorrow afternoon and then that front stalls to the north of the Island.
"It will not be exceptionally windy, as it has been over the last week or two. It's not going to be anything too extreme, hopefully."
Bad weather on Thursday and Saturday led to the Causeway and airport being closed, ferries cancelled and boats run aground.
Flyaway, a 33ft white sloop that sunk off Albuoy's Point on Thursday, was recovered yesterday.
And Blue Stocking, a 41ft sailboat which came off its moorings at Ferry Reach over the weekend, was safely back on them by last night.
Airport manager Aaron Adderley said he was not aware of any cancelled or delayed flights today. But he added: "It's been an unprecedented year as far as weather delays and cancellations and even an airport closure.
"We have closed the airport twice this winter and we have never had to do that before for non-hurricane conditions. From December 1 to date, we have had over 80 flight cancellations, all Bermuda weather related."
Last Thursday's storm saw winds reaching 47 knots and gusts up to 61 knots at the airport. A record-breaking low temperature for the time of year of 51.6F/10.9C was recorded.
Over the weekend, the peak wind gust was 75 knots at Commissioner's Point, according to Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre. A ten-minute sustained wind of 53 knots was also recorded there.
The Causeway wind sensor recorded a wind gust of 67 knots and Harbour Radio recorded a wind gust of 63 knots. The airport recorded a peak wind gust of 60 knots, with a ten-minute sustained wind of 45 knots.
