Snorkel Park has become a vibrant hub of entertainment in the West End.

This week alone, the night spot will feature a pre-Cup Match Soca Show tonight, followed by Thursday nights regular ?Jahstice? show, then Culture Shock with Chuck Fenda on Friday night and finally the weekend will wrap up with the Sunset Music Fest.

Sunset Music Fest is a new event hosted by Snorkel Park which sees Hubie?s house band ?Spirit? delight with soft jazz tunes every Sunday.

?The Sunset Music Fest came about when the Department of Tourism asked for input early in the year,? Snorkel Park manager Ray Lambert said.

?We submitted our plans and we were lucky enough to have them partner with us on this event.?

He added: ?It is a new venture and for us we thought that Sundays would be a good day, because summer Sundays are quite busy. But we generally close the park at 6 p.m., so we didn?t want to interfere with the general flow of the park itself because we get all walks of life up here.

?So, what we have been doing is at 6 p.m. putting a gate on and by 7 p.m. there is a buffet being served and by 8 p.m., there is the performance.

?Dockyard itself gets a little quiet in the evenings, but this helps to create a whole new atmosphere. At first we were going against the tide a little, but now it is starting to flow with us.?

The event generally costs $20 at the door but when international acts are performing the cover charge is bumped up to $40.

?Our approach to it is that it is live music and there are very few places in the world where you can go and hear live music for anything less,? Mr. Lambert said.

?We?ve had some real quality music and, those who have been coming up, have been almost surprised. It is primarily local entertainment, but we do have some feature nights where we try to bring in international acts ? we try to do that at least once a month.

?But for every other week we have Tempo and Randy Lambert as our house band and those guys bring guest artists with them and we have had the likes of Shine Hayward, James Richardson and Dean Smith.

?Each week it changes and we also encourage musicians who aren?t working to come up and jam ? Randy is more than willing to work with other musicians. It is an opportunity for musicians themselves to showcase.?

Sunset Music Fest tends to attract a mature crowd, he added.

?One of the things that we have noticed is that most of the events cater to a younger audience,? Mr. Lambert said.

?We felt that this event would cater to some of our more mature patrons that want to be able to go out and enjoy music. We have tried cater to that particular niche.

?It is jazz, but we don?t like to look at it as ?just? jazz ? they are entertainers and sometimes they will take a Latin beat because it is more contemporary music.?

Jahstice, Bermuda?s premiere Reggae band, has the regular Thursday night gig at Snorkel Park ? this event was one of the venue?s great success stories from last year.

?It was the number one event last year and one of the cool things with them was that we were getting guest artists every week and in a sense that is the parallel that we were trying to develop with jazz,? Mr. Lambert said.

Bermudian barbecue is served for those music lovers also looking for sustenance.

?Each week we highlight some of our dishes and generally it is an assortment of peas and rice, chicken, to cassava pie to fish cakes,? Mr. Lambert said.

?We have such delicacies as shark hash on occasion, curry conch and then we cap it off with fish or steak. It has gone very well and it is $25 for the food for people who want to eat.?

Equipped with beach and deck chairs as well as tables and chairs and a bar area, Snorkel Park offers a choice of locations for patrons to make themselves comfortable.

?Some people also bring their towels and sit off and then get up to dance, so it has proved to be a very interesting night,? Mr. Lambert said.
