'Old timers' from Pot and Forties renew rivalry

It will be a blast from the past when veteran footballers who played for Forties and Lobster Pot in the fomer Commercial League meet again this Saturday.

The 'Goldie Oldies' clash at BAA Field will feature players over 40 and even those in their 60s, some of whom have flown in from overseas to mark the special occasion.

John White (Lobster Pot) and David Mutch (Forties) have organised the reunion, with John Bookless, an ex-Forties and Pot player, also instrumental in setting up the game although he's unable to get back to the Island from his home in the UK.

Among those expected to take part are Cal Dill, Mike Levon and Derek Scott, all of whom 'retired' from top clubs in order to join the Comercial League back in the 1980s.

Several others who either played in the old First and Second Divisions before switching to the less-intense Commercial League, which only last year was replaced by the Corona League, will be the line-ups.

" The idea is to recreate the fun which teams like Lobster Pot and Forties enjoyed when they played in the Commercial League. It was always a fun, a family oriented league," said Mutch.

"There were some good teams and good players in the league, but they were never allowed by the BFA to play in the Challenge or FA Cups.

"But we used to run the concession stands at the major finals and gave our profits over to the BFA.

"This Saturday's game isn't at all serious. In fact, we're not sure how many will last until half-time. As such, there will be a number of substitutions. We're hoping as many as 30 players will turn out. In fact, any body who played for Pot or Forties back in the '80s and '90s are welcome."

Forties was formed in the early '80s when the old clubhouse at the Bermudiana Hotel burned down and Pot was formed in 1982 by a splinter group of ex-Forties players, and the teams' rivalry was maintained in a number of subsequent Commercial League encounters

Those expected to play in Saturday's match (BAA, 3.30 p.m.) include:
